The Boston vs. Kona Argument

Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been asking the question

“Is the Boston Marathon worth it?”

And what I meant was

Is it worth the hours of training you put in every week?

The long run

The speed work

The 50+ weekly miles, every week

Is it worth the suffering you put up with for 26.2 miles?

Is it worth the $150 registration fee?

Is it worth the trip to Boston, to fight the crowds and elevated pricing?

I’ve gotten varied answers from

“Hell Yes”

“Not Really”

“It’s worth the $150 to enter, but not the airfare to get there”

And then I got

“It’s like Kona for the Ironman”

That got me thinking, is it like Kona for the Ironman?

Yes, both are for the top of the field in their sport.

But I think the similarities stop there

Boston has qualifying time standards

Vs.

Ironman has spots you qualify for

What I mean is, anyone that beats the time standard, has a chance to apply for Boston

In the Ironman, you need to be the top of your age group,

No matter what your finishing time

To validate the “It’s like Kona” argument

1. The BAA would need to divide up the number of slots for their race

2. Allocate those slots, based on number of entries, to every marathon that they recognize as a qualifying race

3. Each marathon, will need to divide those slots up for every age group

4. Only the top finishers of each age group, in each marathon, will be allowed to go to the Boston Marathon
